OBITUARY:
T. L. Raines - Mr. T. L. Raines, died at his residence near Prescott, March 6th, 1900 after a short illness, during which he bore all suffering and pain incidental there to with true christian courage and fortitude.

He was born September 6, 1861 and was but 39 years old when he passed away.

He was married to Misss Amanda Frisby, who with their 7 children, is left to mourn the loss of the sweet spirited husband and father.

When 31 years old, he gave his heart to the savior and has ever been an active, earnest and faithful christian toiling day by day for Christ and his church. His sweet amiable character endeared him to all with whom he came in contact, and his death effected a wide circle of friends most keenly.

Yes, Bro. Raines is resting sweetly, resting to day it will not be long until we hear the voice of Jesus calling us saying come home dear children and then we will lay down our arms and we will go to the place where God has prepared for them that serve him. Yes, we will see Bro. Raines again, but we will never see him suffering again as he suffered here. We shall reach that summer land some sweet bye and bye. Some sweet day we will meet our loved ones that are gone, may the dear savior bless and comfort Sister Raines whose heart is bleeding and torn. May she look up and say thy will be done oh Lord, may the dear savior ever be her comfort day by day, and may she feel her departed companion has only gone on before and that she will soon go and meet him in that lovely land where there is no more sad parting, neither will there be any more good byes heard there will always be sweet communion there with our loved ones and with our Savior who died for us. We shall sing on that beautiful shore the melodious songs of the blest and our spirits will sorrow no more, not a sigh for the blessings of rest.

Third Arkansas Infantry Regiment, CSA

Company I—“Tulip Rifles”

This company of volunteers, calling themselves the “Tulip Rifles,” was organized at Tulip, Dallas county, Arkansas, June 25, 1861, by Captain George D. Alexander. It traveled to Lynchburg, Virginia, where it was assigned to the Third Regiment, Arkansas Volunteers, as Company I, July 1861. On July 18, 1862, thirty members of disbanded Company B, Second Arkansas Infantry Battalion, were assigned to this company. Company I was the only company in the Third Arkansas that made significant use of conscripts to reinforce its ranks. In March 1863, thirty farmers and furloughed soldiers from other regiments were conscripted at Camden, Arkansas, and sent to the company in Virginia. During its four years of service, 150 men served in Company I. Only thirteen of them remained when the company was surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. Their paroles were signed on April 12, 1865, and they were released to go home.

CONFEDERATE ARKANSAS TROOPS

3rd Regiment, Arkansas Infantry

3rd Infantry Regiment, assembled at Lynchburg, Virginia, in June, 1861, contained men from Ashley, Drew, Desha, Hot Spring, Union, and Dallas counties. Assigned to H.R. Jackson's command, the unit took part in Lee's Cheat Mountain Campaign, then moved to Winchester and served under T.J. Jackson. Later it was assigned to General J. G. Walker's, J. B. Robertson's, and J. Gregg's command and became part of the Texas Brigade. After fighting in the Seven Days' Battles the 2nd Arkansas Battalion merged into the regiment. It went on to participate in many conflicts of the Army of Northern Virginia from the Maryland Campaign to Cold Harbor, except when it was with Longstreet at Suffolk, Chickamauga, and Knoxville. The 3rd was active in the long Petersburg siege north of the James River and later the Appomattox Campaign. In December, 1861, it totalled 756 men, and reported 15 casualties at the Greenbrier River and 182 during the Maryland Campaign. Of the 479 engaged at Gettysburg, thirty-five percent were disabled. The regiment surrendered with 15 officers and 130 men. The field officers were Colonels Van H. Manning, Albert Rust, and Robert S. Taylor; Lieutenant Colonels Seth M. Barton and William H. Tebbs; and Majors J. Hickson Capers, and John W. Reedy, Samuel W. Smith, and W.K. Wilkins.

IMPORTANT FROM FORTRESS MONROE; Arrival of Exchanged Prisoners from Richmond. The People There in a Terrible State of Excitement. A Part of Stoneman's Cavalry at White House.
Published: May 8, 1863

FORT MONROE, Wednesday, May 6.

Col. LUDLOW, Commissioner for exchange of prisioners, has just returned from City Point, and has effected the release and exchange of all United States officers held by the rebels. These officers, 250 in number, and 325 men, include Gens. STOUGHTON and WILLICH. The State of Maine left with them for Annapolis this afternoon in charge of Capt. MULFORD. Col. LUDLOW has completed the following exchanges:

First -- All officers and enlisted men, and all persons, whatever may have been their classification or character, who have been delivered at City Point up to the 6th of May, 1863.

Second -- All officers who have been captured and released on parole up to April 1, 1863, wherever they may have been captured.

Third -- All enlisted men who have been captured in North Carolina and Virginia, and released on parole up to March 1, 1863.

The telegraph cable is interrupted between here and Cherrystone, and prevents us from forwarding anything by telegraph.

Two of the prisoners who arrived from Richmond to-day report that they were captured within two miles of the city of Richmond on Sunday, the 3d inst., while in pursuit of a courier with dispatches from JACKSON to DAVIS.

The City (Richmond) Battalion went out on Sunday to see what the trouble was, as the communication was cut off with Fredericksburgh both by railroad and telegraph.

The people of Richmond are in a terrible state of excitement, and the report of the rebels having captured 5,000 Union prisoners is false, and was gotten up by JEFF. DAVIS to quiet the excitement of his people.

We learn to-day by the Yorktown mail boat that a part of STONEMAN's Cavalry arrived at the White House yesterday.4 He was captured on 14 July 1863 at Falling Waters, MD. (Gettysburg) and confined at Point Lookout, Maryland. He ended military service on 17 December 1863 at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D. C., when he took oath of allegiance and was released north. He and Narcissus Curry appeared on the census at Caney Twp., Mt. Moriah, Ouachita County, AR, on 5 August 1870.5 Middleton Wood Raines appeared on the census of 5 June 1880 in the household of Josiah Perry Raines and Mary Ann Malinda Sampson at Caney, Nevada County, AR; Middleton Wood Raines is listed as W. W. Raines.6 Middleton Wood Raines was listed on the tax rolls in 1892 at Nevada County, AR.7 He appeared on the census of 9 June 1900 in the household of Eliphus Eli Raines and Willie Clementine McDaniel at Precinct 3, Anderson County, TX.1 Middleton Wood Raines died on 31 December 1900 at Slocum, Anderson Co., TX, at age 84.
