  5. [S77] Letter, Fannie Ann Cox to unknown recipient, 1983, "I was born Oct. 22, 1888 near Prescott, in Navada County, Ark. to John M. and Phoeba Francis Cox. I had 4 half sisters and 3 half brothers and 2 own brothers. My mother (who's maiden name was House) was first married to Frank Ben Holder and they had two children, Nannie and Ben. My fathers first wife was Rittie Holder (a sister ot Frank Holder) -- Frank and Rittie died; then my mother and father married and to them were born John, myself and Larkin. My dad and his first wife Rittie had 5 children, Lissia (Celisa), Rettie (Rosetta), Luther (Bud), Minnie and Jim. So you see my 1/2 sisters and borthers are cousins to each other, and are step brothers and sisters. Our home was a large comfortable fairly good looking place with 2 16 foot rooms with halway between and long porch across front, two smaller bed rooms and large kitchen and dining room in one. There was a croquett set out front and some one always playin on it. Large oak trees surrounded the croquet yard and also in our back yard where we played. The tree we loved most was a big mulberry tree which grew so close to our front porch that its branches reached out over the porch roof and there, the boys could climb from the tree right on to the roof and gather the mulberries. Pa and the older boys would spread a sheet on the ground under the tree and then climb up in the tree and shake down the mulberries on it, and then we'd have a feast! I suppose it was just a wild mulberry, but I've never seen any so large and good as they were.

As far back as I can remember my sisters Zettie and Lissie were married and had children nearly mine and Larkins age that we played with. Fact is that we attended church and Sunday school at "Shady Grove Baptist" church. Sister Nannie was my first S.S. teacher.

We also went to school at "Sweet Home" just such a short distance from our house that we came home from school for dinner each day. One day at school I came near drowning. We played on the little creek or stream that was near the school house and one day while walking a log over the stream I lost my balance and fell in. It was only a narrow stream but this log was over a narrow deep hole and if my sister Minnie who was several years older than I had not been near by had not come to my rescue and pulled me from the water I'd have dround. She took me home for dry clothes and when my mother had dressed me in dry clothes she took me to the peach orchard where she borke off a little switch from one of the trees and switched me with it. That was to teach me not to play on the creek again. I couldn't understand why she would whip me when I had come so close to drownding.

It was somewhere about that time im my life that I had the misfortune of breaking my left collar bone. It came about like this. Sister Minnie had gotten snuff from somewhere and not only was she trying to dip it but had me to try it, and it made me so sick. She told me to take a pinch of soda and that would help me. So in trying to reach the soda box I stood up on a bench and fell breking my collar bone. I can't remember if she was punished for her snuff dipping or not but for days I suffered with my fractured bone and my dad petted me so until I had to be lifted up in bed. It was our job to carry in the wood for the fireplace each evening and since my neck and sholder was so sore I got out of doing that job for some time.

About the year 1897 we left Ark and moved west to the Indian Territory. It was the month of October and my 9th birthday came while we were traveling. We were not by ourselves for some of our friends as well as my sister Zettie and family made the trip with us. So there was quite a wagon train of us. Can't remember how many days it took us to reach our destination. My fathers two brothers, uncles George and Billy Cox had preceded us a few years before and we found them near Duncan and Hope. We visited with them close to Hope and rented a farm near Hope where pa soon enrolled us three, John Larkin and me in school. My mother did not live long but died in Aug of that year and was buried in the Hope Cemetery. We had met our closest neighbors who lived just a little ways across the "Wild Horse Creek" from us. In that day and time people were real friendly with new comers and we loved our close friends and visited with them and they with us. I can remember going with my mother to Mrs. Garrots to sew some baby cloths for Zettie who was expecting a new baby. Mrs. Garrett had several children who were near my age and we all like each other. Now Mrs. Garret was a widow and soon after my mothers death she and my dad began seeing each other. Just before Christmas they married.

Both Minnie and Nannie had married: Nannie married before mother died and Minnie married just a week before pa did, so I guess he felt like he needed some one to help him raise us three kids. But his marriage . . ." (rest of letter is missing.).
