Benjamin F. Cagle Jr.

M, b. 28 November 1850, d. 27 October 1921
FatherBenjamin F. Sr. Cagle b. c 1830
Benjamin F. Cagle Jr. "Benjamin Franklin Cagle, born 1850, grew up in Haralson County, (GA), where brother Jackson apparently stimulated his interest and enthusiasm in penmanship and art. At about age 18 he married Anna Cook probably somewhere in Alabama. They went to Arkansas, via Tennessee, where several uncles and aunts had previously settled in and around Clark and Polk counties. By 1880 census time, Benjamin and Anna had three children: Lena, born about 1873, Clara, born about 1876 and Benjamin Jackson, born about 1879. Benjamin supported himself by farming part of the year and conducting penmanship schools the other part. While off teaching in Tennessee, another woman stole his heart. After he returned home, Anna discovered an unfamiliar photo tucked away in his belongings, which confirmed her long founded suspicions that he had taken an interest in other women. Benjamin soon left again, probably after a bit of conflict and turmoil, and never returned. Anna Cagle, unable to support herself and young family, sought refuge with Cook and Cagle relatives. (She was taken in temporarily by Benjamin's uncle, John C. Cagle, who lived near Amity at that time.) A local fellow, Samuel House, admired Anna and happily accepted a new ready-made family for her hand in marriage. Anna is said to have made no secret that her real preference was for Benjamin and vowed to leave Samuel should Ben ever change his mind and return to her. Meanwhile, Benjamin headed for Tennessee and the woman in the photo, Margaret Melvina Burch. They were married October 17, 1880 in Rutherford County. No one knows if Margaret ever discovered she was wife number two. At any rate, her children were not told. Benjamin and Maggie moved to Travis County, Texas with their infant son, Spencer, about 1882. The family grew with the addition of seven more children, all born in Travis County."1 He was born on 28 November 1850 at Chattanooga County, GA. He married Annie Marie Cook, daughter of Joseph Cook and Sidney Canada, circa 1870. Benjamin F.      Benjamin House was born circa 1810 at SC.1 He married (?) Unknown circa 1832; Benjamin House probably married the first time between 1830 and 1833. This assumption is based on the age of his first known child who was born in 1833 and the absence of Benjamin as a head of household on the 1830 census. It is assumed that he is still included in his father's household in 1830. I found a marriage on 20 Jan 1834 for a Benjamin House to and Elizabeth House and had thought this might be his first marriage, but it has since been disproven. He married Nancy Humphrey on 11 Jan 1849, in Carroll Co, TN. (Transcribed Marriage Records 1838-1860, Vol. B, p. 182).2 Benjamin House appeared on the census at Carroll Co., TN, on 1840 p. 29, Benjamin House - 10011,31001.3 He was involved in a land transaction In 1846, Hugh ROBINSON entered 134 and 1/2 acres of land in Carroll Co., TN. This land was transferred to a Lawrence HOUSE in 1848 and was surveyed for him that same year. One of the witnesses was Benjamin HOUSE. (Carroll County Land Surveys-Feb 1842-Apr 1849," Tennessee State Library and Archives, Microfilm Roll #209, p. 447.) In 1856, an indenture was made between Benjamin HOUSE and Jno. H. PEAKE, in Clark County, AR, with Henry HOUSE as security. ("Clark County Deed Book," Vol. J, pp. 35-36.) In 1859, Benjamin sold land to Samuel HOUSE in the same section where Benjamin lived. ("Clark County Deed Book," Vol. K, p. 359.) Benjamin HOUSE was named commissioner of the road leading from Huntingdon to Jackson from the middle of the bridge over the Forked Deer River to the Madison County line. in 1846 at Carroll Co., TN. He was living in 1849 at Carroll Co., TN; Tax List: 1849, Carroll Co, TN. He married Nancy Humphrey, daughter of Hustuss (Eustace) Humphrey and Pheby (?), on 11 January 1849 at Carroll Co., TN. Benjamin House was involved in a land transaction Benjamin received a land grant of 200 acres in Carroll Co, TN on 27 Aug 1849 (Grant No. 12129 taken out by E. M. Sullivan, Oct. 4th 1852, located in Survey Record, 1849-59, p. 192). Benjamin and his family moved from Carroll Co, TN, to Clark Co, AR, in about 1854. He bought land near Hollywood, Clark Co, AR in about 1854. He bought land near Hollywood, Clark Co, AR, from John H. Peake (Clark Co, AR Deeds, Book I, pp. 345-347). on 27 August 1849 at Carroll Co., TN. He and Nancy Humphrey appeared on the census at 1st Civil District, Carroll County, TN, on 29 August 1850.4 Benjamin House and Nancy Humphrey appeared on the census at Greenville Twp., Arkadelphia, Clark County, AR, on 27 June 1860.5 Benjamin House appeared on the census at Greenville Twp., Spoonville, Clark County, AR, on 2 September 1870.6 He appeared on the census at Greenville Twp., Clark County, AR, on 4 June 1880.7 He died on 19 December 1884 at Hollywood, Clark County, AR. He may have been buried in the Golden Cemetery in Clark Co, AR, as several members of his family are buried there, but so far no one has been able to locate his grave.      Mary J. House Mary J. House probably married in TN before the family moved away. It was at one time thought she married Thomas Hamilton Gillespie, but it has been proved that Mary J. Gillespie is the daughter of Benjamin Golden, as she is listed as his heir in his probate record. Our Mary J. probably never came to Arkansas as she is not listed as an heir in Benjamin House's probate records. It is now believed that she married Henry Gately, had one child and then died. This is supported by a descendant of Henry and Mary, through the child, Phoebe Gately. She was born circa 1833 at TN. She appeared on the census of 29 August 1850 in the household of Benjamin House and Nancy Humphrey at 1st Civil District, Carroll County, TN.1 Mary J.      Nancy House Nancy probably married in TN before the family moved away. There is a record in Carroll County, TN of a Nancy House married to C. L. Williiams on 7 Oct 1851 (Vol. B, p. 231) and this may be her. It was at one time thought she was possibly married to Joseph Francis. However, further checking reveals the Nancy Francis in Clark County, AR, was either Nancy TIMS or Nancy MILLS. (Wendy Richter, Clark County Arkansas, Past and Present, p. 423 and 488.) Our Nancy probably never came to Arkansas as she is not listed as an heir in Benjamin House's probate records. She was born circa 1834 at TN.
