W. H. (Bill) Porter, 78 passed away at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Commerce. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Delta Funeral Home Chapel with Sister Virgie Temple of Paris, officiating. Interment was made in Oaklawn Cemetery.
Mr. Porter, who lived at 300 East Waco in Cooper, had been a resident of Delta County most of his life. He was a veteran of World War I and was a retired dairy farmer.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lillian Porter of Cooper; one son, Billy Porter, Plano; two daughters, Mrs. Odell Preas, Grand Prairie; and Mrs. David Flenniken of Paris; one step daughter, Mrs. Henry Harrison of Dallas; three brothers, Dick Porter, Cooper, Nolan Porter, Venita, Okla; and Pete Porter, Waco; seventeen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Earl, who died in 1961.3,8,9 He was buried on 26 June 1974 at Oaklawn Cemetery, Cooper, Delta County, TX.

COOPER - Susie Oats, 87, died Tuesday afternoon in Birchwood Manor Nursing Home in Cooper. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Charleston Methodist Church with the Rev. Johnny Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Charleston Cemetery under the direction of Delta Funeral Home. Mrs. Oats was born Dec. 4, 1892 in Delta County, a daughter of H. A. and Eliza Phillips Nabors. She married Byron Oats Jan. 28, 1910. He preceded her in death on March 17, 1969. Mrs. Oats was a lifelong resident of Charleston. Survivors include a son, Arvol Oats of Charleston; three daughters, Mrs. Venice Worden and Mrs. Glenna Scott, both of Charleston and Miss Betty Oats of Dallas; four grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren. The body will lie at the church from 10 a.m. to service time. The family will receive friends tonight at the funeral home."3

Initially, the county was named Benton for Colonel Thomas Hart Benton. In 1858, the name was changed to Calhoun in honor of John C. Calhoun of South Carolina. The county seat is located at Anniston.2 Bevin G. Nabors and Mary Johnson appeared on the census at Peakes Hill, Calhoun County, AL, on 1860.3 Bevin G.
