Vera Lucille Slakey, 90, of Cooper died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at Birchwood Manor.

Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, in Delta Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Johnny Witherspoon and Rev. Rick Perkins officiating. Interment follows in Oaklawn Cemetery.

Visitation is to be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, at Delta Funeral Home.

She was born Feb. 16, 1919, in Charleston, daughter of Gus Mills and Verda Nabors Mills. She married Thomas Hollis Slakey Dec. 17, 1937, and he preceded her in death Oct. 31, 1998. She was a lifelong resident of Delta County and a member of the First Pentecostal Church of God.

She was also preceded in death by sisters and brothers, Essie Caldwell, Wona Bledsoe, Ray Mills, Bernice Mills and Clifford Mills.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Wendell and Betty Slakey of Cooper; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.3

Last Rites Held For Crash Victim - Miss Murlie Porter instantly killed in auto accident.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock at Charleston for Miss Murlie Porter, 22, who was instantly killed early Tuesday morning in an automobile accident on the Cooper-Paris highway near North Sulphur River.
Miss Porter was instantly killed about 12:30 when the car in which she was riding with three others struck the banister of the first bridge north of Sulphur River in Lamar county. She died from a slashed throat and a broken neck.
Mrs. Nolan Avance of Centralia, Ill., was driving the car and she is believed to have dozed while driving. She and her husband were visiting the Porters. Lloyd Wright of Chalreston, along with the Avances, was taken to a Paris hospital where they were released Tuesday morning.
Rites for Miss Porter were held in the Charleston Church with interment being made in the Charleston cemetery. Services were conducted by Bro. Wickersham. Smith Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Miss Porter, who was born Feb. 22, 1918, is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Porter, three sisters and two brothers.4 She was buried on 12 June 1940 at Charleston Cemetery, Charleston, Delta County, TX.1

Virginia Ellen Rose Porter, 86, a longtime resident of Grand Prairie, passed away Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, after a brief illness.
Services are set for 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, at Moore Funeral Home in Arlington. Burial to follow at Moore Memorial Gardens in Arlington.
Visitation is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15, at the funeral home.
She was born in Cooper on Nov. 15, 1926, one of seven children born to the late William Woody and Minnie Viola Rose. She moved with her family to the Dallas area where she had successful careers in cosmetology, nursing and as an entrepreneur and owner of the Décor Center in Grand Prairie for over 15 years. Virginia was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister.
She is preceded in death by her beloved son, Samuel Dewane Porter; and daughter, Dorothy Jean Hanks; great-granddaughter Lacy Jean Spurlock; and sisters, Elsie Aubrey, Letris Cherry, Robbie Gilbert, Loretta Allen and Nellie Kyle.
She is survived by her sister, Roberta Lamb of Grand Prairie; daughters, Brenda Lawson of Alvarado, Diane Sturgeon of Abilene, Judy Gentry of Grand Prairie; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Virginia loved being with family and friends. She will forever be remembered and missed by countless people who were blessed to know her.3

     Tyree Porter was born on 14 December 1921 at Charleston, Delta County, TX.1 He appeared on the census of 4 April 1930 in the household of Leslie Alonzo "Dick" Porter and Minnie Olevia "Doll" Turner at Precinct 5, Delta County, TX; Next door to Cart(er) Porter.2 Tyree Porter married Marjorie Elaine Palmer on 28 November 1945.1 Tyree Porter died on 12 April 1991 at Grand Prairie, Dallas County, TX, at age 69.3 He was buried on 15 April 1991 at Charleston Cemetery, Charleston, Delta County, TX.1
